Chemical peels

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are specifically designed to remove the top layers of the skin.

What can peels be used for?

Chemical peels can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, sun damage, pigmentation and fine wrinkles.

Are chemical peels safe?

Chemical peels have been performed by dermatologists for over 50 years and have a proven safety record. For superficial chemical peels, adverse reactions are very rare but can include prolonged redness, irritation and peeling.

Medium depth chemical peels are associated with more side effects and patients can expect redness, irritation and peeling usually lasting for only a few days. Rarer complications include persisting redness or sensitivity, infection, pigmentation issues and scarring.

What peels are available at Peninsula Dermatology?

Peninsula dermatology has a variety of superficial and medium depth chemical peels. Our dermatologists and cosmetic nurses will tailor the type and strength of peel to your individual needs.

In general the deeper peels result in greater clinical improvement but are associated with longer downtime and risk of side effects. For this reason we recommend that peels be performed under the supervision of an experienced health practitioner.

Peninsula Dermatology does not perform deep chemical peels (eg Phenol peel).

How often should chemical peels be performed?

Ideally, superficial chemical peels should be performed on a regular basis. To achieve maximum benefit we would normally recommend a course of four to six treatments performed one month apart.

Medium depth peels are normally used to treat specific skin issues and do not need to be performed as frequently.

What are the costs of chemical peels?

At Peninsula Dermatology we offer the combination of a superficial chemical peel with complementary Healite II treatment.

We believe that superficial chemical peels are an important component of any skin care regime. Superficial chemical peels should be performed on a regular basis rather than as a once-off procedure - our prices are a reflection of this philosophy.

Specialist perspective on chemical peels

Dr Hugh Roberts, Consultant Dermatologist

"Superficial chemical peels are a useful addition to any skincare regime. They are a safe and effective treatment and when used regularly they can dramatically improve the texture and luminosity of the skin. The addition of a complimentary Healite II treatment for all our superficial chemical peels further enhances their effect. "
